Apply for a Grant

Through funds made available from the Lowe Syndrome Association (LSA) Memorial Research Fund, the LSA is able to periodically solicit proposals for research grants by interested scientific and medical researchers.

Grant Guidelines

  • The Lowe Syndrome Association (LSA) seeks proposals for investigator-initiated, proof-of-principle clinical trials evaluating therapeutic approaches for renal tubular dysfunction in individuals with Lowe syndrome.
  • Include a scientifically justified clinical trial design with clinically meaningful renal, metabolic, and safety outcome measures.
  • Have the potential to generate data that can inform future multicenter studies, regulatory discussions, and broader therapeutic development.
  • Priority will be given to proposals that:
    • Evaluate FDA-approved repurposed pharmacological therapies that have established safety and toxicity data but have not yet been evaluated for clinical efficacy in individuals with Lowe syndrome.
    • Are supported by compelling preclinical evidence demonstrating potential benefit for renal tubular dysfunction in relevant in vitro cell models and in vivo mammalian animal models.
    • Evaluate non-pharmacological interventions, such as dietary or metabolic therapies, when supported by relevant preclinical evidence and sufficient human safety data.
    • Include a scientifically justified clinical trial design with clinically meaningful renal, metabolic, and safety outcome measures.
    • Have the potential to generate data that can inform future multicenter studies, regulatory discussions, and broader therapeutic development.
    • Collaborative and multicenter proposals are encouraged when appropriate.

The LSA has not established a fixed award amount for this funding opportunity. Applicants should submit a detailed and fully justified budget appropriate for the proposed scope and duration of the study.

Proposed budgets will be evaluated based on the scientific merit, feasibility, and appropriateness of the proposed research. The LSA reserves the right to fund one or more applications based on scientific quality, available philanthropic support, and program priorities.

The LSA invites applications from clinical investigators with expertise relevant to the proposed research, particularly pediatric nephrology or metabolic disease, and experience conducting clinical trials.

Investigators should be affiliated with an Academic Medical Center or other Accountable Care Organization with access to an Institutional Review Board (IRB) for Human Subjects Research.

International investigators with appropriate expertise are welcome to apply.

Grant funds must be used in accordance with the approved research plan and budget. Detailed requirements regarding allowable costs, budget preparation, indirect costs, and other funding restrictions are provided in the Lowe Syndrome Association Research Proposal Guidelines.

Any significant changes to the approved research plan, protocol, or use of grant funds must be communicated to the Lowe Syndrome Association.

Funded investigators will be expected to provide periodic scientific and financial progress reports to the Lowe Syndrome Association and notify the Association of significant protocol modifications.

A final scientific report must be submitted upon completion of the project. Investigators will also be expected to present study findings to the Lowe Syndrome Association Medical & Scientific Advisory Board and, when appropriate, at an LSA scientific or family meeting.

Lowe Syndrome Association support must be acknowledged in all publications and presentations resulting from the funded research.
